Japan plans to designate 25 technological fields for patent confidentiality

9

According to a report by Japan Net, the Japanese government plans to designate 25 technological fields and classify patents for advanced information that can be used for military purposes as confidential, in accordance with the law promoting economic security.

These 25 fields encompass stealth technology that renders aircraft undetectable by radar, autonomous drone control technology, and spent fuel reprocessing technology, among others.

According to the current system, patents are made public one and a half years after application. However, the Economic Security Law of Japan stipulates that if a patent is designated as a preservation target after national review, it will not be made public.

Japan's new institutional plan points out that as "major inventions that may cause damage to national and national security", extremely sensitive inventions in terms of safety should be designated as preservation targets. The plan specifically lists 15 areas, including "camouflage and concealment technology" that enables aircraft to have stealth performance, and "weapon-related unmanned aerial vehicle and automatic control technology".

According to reports, for 10 fields such as "solid fuel rocket engine technology" that can be used for hypersonic flight, considering the impact on private industries, designated preservation will only be carried out for defense purposes or when commissioned by the state.

It is reported that the Japanese government will propose the above institutional plan to the expert meeting related to the Economic Security Law to be held in mid-June. After going through procedures such as public solicitation of opinions, it is striving to implement it from next spring.
